The Unfavourable Angle

The Unfavourable Angle

Extract from the private diary of Gamma

(Case File 07 — Status: Unresolved)

3:17 A.M.

I have stopped calling it a video.

Videos are made by people.

This was made for people.

There is a difference.

I understood that distinction only after watching it for the thirty-seventh time.

The original upload has been deleted.

The channel is gone.

The account never existed, according to the platform.

Yet I have the file.

I have the original upload date.

I have the comments.

I have screenshots of people commenting on a video which, according to every available record, was never there.

And I have twelve witnesses who remember watching it.

Eleven remember what happened.

The twelfth remembers something else.

That is where this investigation begins.

1. THE VIDEO

The title was:

THE ANGLE YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO SEE

Uploaded at 02:14 UTC on a channel named MorrowGlass.

No subscribers.

No previous videos.

No profile picture.

No description.

The account vanished forty-seven minutes after the upload.

The video was eight minutes and eleven seconds long.

Nothing happened for the first twenty-three seconds.

Black screen.

No music.

No voice.

Then a white geometric figure appeared.

A semicircle.

Not a perfect semicircle.

That was the first thing that bothered me.

The curve was slightly wrong.

Too flat at the bottom.

Too narrow at the sides.

Like somebody had been told what a semicircle was but had never actually seen one.

Beneath it was a sentence.

Six words.

I will not reproduce them here.

Not because they were frightening.

They weren’t.

Because they were instructions.

The video proceeded according to those instructions.

Viewers were asked to pause.

Rotate their screens.

Stand up.

Look at the nearest corner of the room.

Count the visible right angles.

Nothing supernatural.

Nothing illegal.

Nothing even particularly clever.

Just geometry.

Then, at exactly 04:36, the figure changed.

The semicircle became something else.

Something that looked, depending on the viewer’s position, like an eye.

Or a doorway.

Or a mouth.

Or nothing at all.

That was when the comments began.

2. THE COMMENTS

I recovered 186 comments from an archived browser cache.

The first forty-three were ordinary.

“What is this?”

“Is this an ARG?”

“Anyone else seeing the shape move?”

“Fake.”

“Cool editing.”

Then came the strange ones.

Not frightening.

Strange.

User Lena_94 wrote:

“It looks different when I move my head.”

User MikaelNorth replied:

“Don’t move your head.”

Thirty seconds later:

“Too late.”

Then:

“It noticed.”

Most ARGs rely on ambiguity.

This relied on agreement.

People began describing the same thing without communicating with one another.

A dark vertical line.

A second curve behind the first.

Something occupying the negative space.

A shape which appeared only when the viewer stopped looking directly at it.

Classic psychological suggestion.

I thought so.

I was wrong.

At 05:02, a user named Orchid posted:

“Why is it in my room?”

Three people laughed.

Then seven.

Then twenty-one.

Then the comments stopped.

For nine minutes.

At 05:11, somebody wrote:

“It isn’t in the room.”

Another user replied:

“Then why did mine move?”

That comment was removed.

The account that posted it was deleted.

So was the account before it.

And the one before that.

I began to suspect an elaborate hoax.

That would have been comforting.

Human beings make hoaxes.

Human beings seek attention.

Human beings enjoy frightening strangers.

Human beings are stupid enough to construct elaborate mysteries and then leave fingerprints everywhere.

I understand human stupidity.

It has rules.

This did not.

3. THE FIRST BODY

There was no murder.

That matters.

Nobody died.

Nobody disappeared.

Nobody was possessed.

No photographs showed impossible creatures standing behind unsuspecting children.

Nothing dramatic.

Instead, people began drawing the same picture.

Without seeing each other’s drawings.

A semicircle.

Four lines.

One open corner.

And a small black point outside the figure.

Always outside.

Never inside.

I collected thirty-two drawings.

Children.

Engineers.

A retired mathematics professor.

A taxi driver.

Two artists.

A priest.

A software developer.

A woman who could not read English.

Different countries.

Different ages.

Different beliefs.

Same geometry.

Almost.

There was one difference.

The black point moved.

Not randomly.

According to the position of the observer.

I tested this myself.

I drew the figure on paper.

Placed the black point outside it.

Then photographed it from different angles.

Nothing happened.

Of course.

Because I had made it.

Then I printed the original frame from the video.

The black point was still there.

I photographed the print.

The point had moved.

Three millimetres.

I photographed it again.

It moved again.

I changed cameras.

Same result.

Changed rooms.

Same.

Changed lighting.

Same.

I put the photograph inside a drawer.

Closed it.

Waited six hours.

Opened it.

The point was gone.

There was a message underneath it.

Written in pencil.

I live alone.

The message said:

YOU ARE MEASURING THE WRONG THING.

4. THE SUSPECTS

I made a list.

Every mystery needs suspects.

That is the first rule of investigation.

If you cannot identify someone who benefits from the mystery, you have not found the mystery yet.

I considered:

MorrowGlass.

Possibly an artist.

Possibly an ARG creator.

Possibly a collective.

The platform.

Algorithmic experiment.

Behavioural manipulation.

Hidden advertising campaign.

Some kind of psychological study.

The viewers.

Mass suggestion.

Collective hallucination.

Internet folklore creating its own mythology.

Someone with access to the original file.

That was the obvious answer.

Obvious answers are useful.

They are usually wrong.

Then I found the fifth possibility.

I did not write a name.

There was no name.

I wrote:

The observer.

5. THE DISCOVERY

The original video contained no hidden frames.

No subliminal images.

No steganography.

No strange audio frequencies.

No backwards speech.

No secret coordinates.

Nothing.

The genius of it was not hidden inside the video.

The genius was that the video changed depending on who watched it.

Not metaphorically.

Mathematically.

I compared twenty-seven recordings made by viewers.

The camera feeds differed.

The rooms differed.

The screens differed.

But one thing remained constant.

The shape was always slightly different.

Each recording contained a geometry that corresponded to the viewer’s environment.

Door frames.

Windows.

Tables.

Ceiling corners.

Even the camera’s own rectangular sensor.

The video was not showing people an object.

It was using the objects around them to complete one.

That was clever.

Very clever.

Human cleverness.

I almost stopped there.

Then I overlaid the recordings.

And saw the impossible part.

When the videos were aligned, the individual shapes formed a single three-dimensional structure.

A structure none of the viewers could have seen.

Because no single viewer had enough information to construct it.

The video was collecting geometry.

Not from the internet.

From the audience.

The viewers were completing the image.

And every time someone watched it, the image became more accurate.

More complete.

More defined.

Like a machine learning algorithm.

Except there was no machine.

At least none that I could find.

6. THE TWELFTH WITNESS

I returned to the twelve witnesses.

Eleven described the same sequence.

The twelfth did not.

His name was Daniel.

He lived three districts away.

He had never spoken to the others.

He remembered the video ending differently.

According to Daniel, the final frame contained no geometry.

It contained a sentence.

Five words.

He wrote them down for me.

WE CAN SEE YOU NOW.

I asked him why he hadn’t mentioned this before.

He looked at me.

Then at the recorder.

Then at the corner of my office.

He said:

“Because I didn’t think you could see it.”

I asked:

“See what?”

He pointed at the wall.

Nothing was there.

I turned back toward him.

He was crying.

Not from fear.

From embarrassment.

He said:

“That’s the problem.”

7. THE SECOND VIDEO

There was another file.

I found it three days later.

Not online.

On my own computer.

The file had no name.

No extension.

Created timestamp: Tomorrow.

Modified timestamp: Yesterday.

Size: 8.11 MB.

Exactly the same as the first video.

I did not open it.

I am not stupid.

I copied it onto an isolated machine.

No network.

No microphone.

No camera.

No wireless hardware.

Then I opened it.

Black screen.

Twenty-three seconds.

White figure.

The same imperfect semicircle.

Except now there was something inside it.

A small black point.

I watched for four minutes.

Nothing.

Five minutes.

Nothing.

Then I noticed something.

The figure wasn’t changing.

The screen was.

The black point remained stationary.

Everything around it moved.

The corners.

The walls.

The desk.

My hands.

The camera I had deliberately removed from the computer.

The room itself.

The video was showing me a room.

My room.

But from above.

I looked up.

Nothing.

I looked back at the screen.

The viewpoint had changed.

Closer.

I could see the top of my desk.

Then my chair.

Then myself.

Sitting in the chair.

Looking at the screen.

The video was approximately three seconds ahead of reality.

I stood up.

The figure stood up.

I raised my hand.

The figure raised its hand.

I stopped.

It did not.

For the first time, I understood the title.

The unfavourable angle.

Not because the angle was impossible.

Because it was outside.

Something was watching the world from a position that human beings were never meant to occupy.

Not above us.

Not behind us.

Not beside us.

Outside the geometry itself.

8. THE REALIZATION

I spent six hours trying to prove it was fake.

I succeeded.

Everything about it could be faked.

The timestamps.

The files.

The comments.

The drawings.

The witnesses.

The geometry.

Even the second video.

Everything had a possible human explanation.

That is the terrifying part.

There is always a possible explanation.

Until there isn’t.

At 03:41, I found the final discrepancy.

The semicircle contained exactly 180 degrees.

Obviously.

That is what a semicircle is.

But the interior angle of the final figure was also 180 degrees.

Impossible.

A closed figure cannot contain the same boundary as an open one.

Unless the space around it is not Euclidean.

Unless the figure isn’t occupying the space.

Unless the figure is describing the space.

That changed everything.

The video wasn’t an image.

It was a measurement.

And the viewers weren’t watching it.

They were being measured by it.

9. THE LAST ENTRY

I have not uploaded this investigation.

I will not.

Not yet.

Because I found something else.

Something which should alarm everybody.

Not scientists.

Not governments.

Not religious people.

Everybody.

The geometry does not care who watches it.

Age doesn’t matter.

Gender doesn’t matter.

Nationality doesn’t matter.

Education doesn’t matter.

Belief doesn’t matter.

The thing responds to observation.

That is all.

You look at it.

It looks back.

Simple.

Elegant.

Unfathomable.

Alien.

I used to believe the greatest mysteries were things we could not explain.

Now I think that was childish.

The truly dangerous mysteries are things we can explain perfectly—

without understanding what they mean.

I have spent eleven nights studying this thing.

Tonight I discovered a pattern.

The point outside the semicircle has moved again.

It is closer.

Every recording I make brings it closer.

Every person who watches brings it closer.

I measured the distance.

Then measured it again.

Then again.

The movement is not linear.

It accelerates.

I finally understand why.

It isn’t approaching the centre.

It is approaching the observer.

Me.

You.

Anyone reading this.

That is why I am writing instead of recording.

That is why there will be no image attached to this entry.

No diagram.

No link.

No reconstruction.

Nothing to look at.

Because I have begun to suspect something.

The original creator did not make the mystery.

They discovered it.

The video was not an invitation.

It was a warning.

And perhaps the most disturbing part is this:

The warning was successful.

We watched it anyway.

—Gamma

04:12 A.M.

Postscript:

There is someone standing outside my window.

I live on the fourth floor.

I checked twice.

There is nobody there.

But the reflection in the glass is wrong.

It shows the room from an angle that does not exist.

And in that reflection, the semicircle is complete.

There is no black point outside it anymore.

It is inside.

Looking outward.

At me.

I think I finally understand what the original creator meant.

The unfavourable angle was never the angle from which we could not see the thing.

It was the angle from which—

it could see us.
